UNFPA organized capacity strengthening workshops on mapping spatial access to health facilities, Geospatial Data and Standards and small area estimation in Lusaka, Zambia from 17 to 21 June 2019.

Invited by UNFPA GRID3 Project, the SALB programme was a centerpiece of the workshop on Geospatial Data and Standards and included an overall presentation of the current progress of SALB in Africa followed by an in-depth exposé on standards, data specifications, coding schema on example and sample data from the Africa region.

Representatives of the Government of the Republic of Zambia, including from The Office of the Surveyor General (OSG), Central Statistics Office (CSO), Ministry of National Development Planning, Ministry of Lands (NSDI Committees), University of Zambia (UNZA), the Ministry of Health and the Water Authority; and government officials from current and prospective GRID3 countries in the region, including Botswana, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria and South Sudan.

The Economic Commission for Africa was also present to emphasize the importance of the SALB Programme in the context of the African Action Plan.

The SALB programme looks forward to upcoming collaboration and partnerships with the countries invited to the workshop and making administrative unit geospatial data and names available soon.
