SALB presented at UNGEGN

The conference held in New York, 8-17 August 2017 marks the fiftieth anniversary of the United Nations Conferences on the Standardization of Geographical Names. In recognition of this milestone, the UNGEGN Bureau planned a number of events to celebrate the work and achievements of UNGEGN and UNCSGN.
The Second Administrative Level Boundaries (SALB) programme was presented at this occasion and took place on 16 August 2017, followed by a Questions & Answers session with Member States.

UNGEGN role and mandate are to promote the recording of locally-used names reflecting the languages and traditions of a country. UNGEGN's goal is for every country to decide on its own nationally standardized names through the creation of national names authorities or recognized administrative processes. With the wide dissemination of the nationally standardized forms through gazetteers, atlases, web-based data bases, toponymic guidelines, etc. UNGEGN can promote the use of these names internationally. For each non-Roman alphabet or script the promotion of the names will be through the adoption and use of a single scientifically-based romanization system.

Some objectives of SALB meet objectives of UNGEGN as it promotes the recording of names reflecting the languages and traditions for administrative names as provided by the country. SALB also promotes the use of the names internationally, and points to the scientifically-based romanization system as per the UNGEGN manual, and finally raises awareness of the importance of using standardized geographical names.
